Jessica Sara a Biography
With a colourful and quirky flare to her songwriting, Jessica Sara centres her lyrics around objects rather than people. Simply put, she recognises that we write about the people we love, so too should we celebrate the things we love.
Some of her favourite compositions so far include, Tea & Sympathy, a song about how a cup of tea can fix everything, Plain Ol’ Jane, a folk-pop inspired song about a chair that fled the streets of an antique flea market, and debut single Diadora, a musical race to find the most iconic trainer of the 80s.
Practicing songwriting since the age of 12, Jessica has embraced endless themes in her writing. Now in full swing of her early twenties, and following a decade of songwriting, she has found her niche in evocative objects - timeless things to treasure.
Jessica Sara is a multidimensional artist: pop & classical pianist, acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter who was first introducted to classicial music with piano lessons aged seven. In her teenage years, she became inspired by guitar, after discovering early rock ‘n roll, and has been self-taught since sixteen and her debut EP trancends into electric dimensions, featuring a genuine Teisco Starway Guitar.
Best describing herself as a latecomer to Beatlemania, her rock influences include The Beatles and their solo careers, Dire Straits and Eagles. Equally, she is in tune with folk music, inspired by Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Or alternatively, she loves the diversity of Bowie, Pulp and The Style Council which spans 3 decades of songwriters.
Equally she credits the 21st century feminist pop icon Maisie Peters for her universal, unmatched, and unhinged songwriting. Jessica’s music compositions are sonically simliar to the Scottish band Belle & Sebastian, who took flight just before the turn of the century.
Raised in Ashington and close to rural Northumberland, Jessica’s passion for writing stems through nature, something that largely shaped her childhood experiences. Her first live recital featured Summertime Blues, a song reminiscing on summer and Get Go Girl, a psychedelic take on love and nature.
Her Christmas song Merry-Go-Round, a seasonal tune and celebration of Ashington at 'Christmastime'.
While her musical narrative has entered new dimensions, nature is a concept she often returns to, having come full circle at MA, singing out to her studies with nature trio Land of The Living. Tracks include, Marmalade - a colourful song captivated by all things orange, Golden Eyes - a nature song scripted from a pencil drawing and Rose-tinted Spectacles - a vision of the Northern Lights.
Well travelled, Jessica loves taking in the world around her and her keen interest in photography has inspired her writing. Take Plain 'Ol Jane, a song about a seemingly ordinary object found in a London junk shop, which captures the chair through a musical lens, uncovering hidden meanings in everyday things;
The two go hand in hand really... so if you see something cool, capture it. Whether you’re the writer, photographer, artist or just the everyday traveller, our imaginations run wild and a picture can say a thousand words as they say...a bit long for a song but you get my meaning.
Attaining a BA and MA in music at Newcastle University, Jessica has completed a variety of compositions during her studies. Her final BA recital entitled 'The Cost of Living' was composed to address the 2020s energy crisis envisioned through a non-tech driven, candle lit showcase, featuring the tracks: Flow, World, Plain Ol’ Jane, Home and Images.
Jessica has a background in Retro Fashion, her writing has become interweaved with iconic fashion objects such as: Shirts, bell-bottom jeans and platform heels. 2024 saw the launch of her debut EP, ‘Thread to Thread’, that pulls ideas from late 20th century fashion.
